Interested in growing your own elderberries?
What variety is right for me and in my zone?
Terry Durham shares his top recommendations on Day 3 of the workshop, and we have a varietal guide in the Resources section. Of the varieties we offer, for hot areas, Wyldewood and Pocahontas are probably your best bet. For cold areas, Ranch and Adams are going to give you great results.
How long from planting to berry harvest?
We typically see flowers as soon as four months after planting, with fruit starting the next year. However, it is normally two years before a heavy yield is established.
How many should I order?
As many as you can reasonably fit in your area! We like to say for personal use, three plants should suffice; but birds do like the berries, and your family and friends will need some immune boosting as well! For small farm calculations, one plant can give up to 15# of berries, or pressed, up to two gallons of juice.
Does Growing Farmers ship outside the continental US?
Currently, we are able to ship to the US, including Alaska, but not to Hawaii. We also ship to Canada but only cuttings. We are not able to ship live plants to Canada.
How long does a plant last producing berries?
Decades!! Elder plants are very hardy and long-lasting.
When I order elderberry cuttings, do they come with instructions?
Absolutely! We provide clear instructions for how to store, plant, and maintain your elderberry cuttings. You can find a copy of the instructions in the Resources section above.

How do I identify the varieties in the wintertime?
It is almost impossible to identify the various varieties in winter unfortunately. In the growing season, it can be a lot easier. Check out our Variety Guide page to learn more.
